Citation:
"On 6th Dec 1941, the 6 NZ Regt was heavily attacked by tanks and infantry. Gun Winthrop as driver of Tractor B.3 stood throughout the action beside his tractor ready to bring his gun out of action. The gun was eventually disabled by a burst of hostile gunfire. At the same time Gun Wintrop was wounded through both arms and both legs. Despite this he crawled into his tractor drove it up to where the gun was, collected a load of personnel and drove them quickly to the rear, After driving for about two miles he collapsed and had to be lifted out of his tractor."
