The following newspaper excerpt (dated 20.03.1943) describes why Schiller was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“On the 23.09.1941, during the course of the great encirclement battle at Kiev, he was involved in combat near Tscherwonyi as a Leutnant. On this day he attacked an enemy battery on his own initiative with 14 brave soldiers of his Kompanie and took it by storm. Those enemy soldiers that did not flee or fall captive were killed in close combat. The Führer awarded him the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross on the 06.01.1942 for this exemplary feat of arms.”
