"During the battles for MONTE CASSINO this officer was 2 i/c of a Squadron in the attack against PASSO GORNO, and then commanded a squadron on the Adriatic coast, as well as during the recent spring offensive. Throughout this period Capt POPIEL showed unusually high qualities of leadership,** and initiative.

During the last operation he particularly distinguished himself on 19 Apr 45 during the battle along the GAIANA rver, where he commanded his squadron with great energy and despite stubborn enemy resistance and difficult ground conditions he succeeded in driving the enemy back from his prepared positions, at the same time inflicting heavy casualties on him.

On 20 Apr 45, thanks to his untiring energy, courage and initiative he succeeded in forcing the enemy from his consecutive defences and forcing him back to the NORTHERN bank of the IDICE river. Throughout the battle he led his squadron with outstanding skill and ability."
