"On 30th June 1944, Lieutenant Iwanek was commanding a platoon of engineers constructing a crossing over the River Chienti for the passage of tanks of 2 Polish Armoured Brigade. Although under heavy fire from the enemy, by his calm courage and disregard for his own safety, he was an example and inspiration to his men and by the successful completion of this task under the hazardous circumstances. The Armour was able to cross the River resulting in the successful development of the operation."
