Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Temporary Captain
Unit:
F Section, Special Operations Executive (SOE), British Government
Awarded on:
June 21st, 1945
Recommendation:
"This officer was parachuted into the Marseille area early in March 1944 as a W/T operator. He had recently escaped from France but again volunteered with the knowledge that he was badly wanted by the Gestapo in connection with his earlier mission.
Despite the hazards of movement with a W/T set in order to avoid detection in this difficult region, he succeeded in maintaining his wireless communications throughout his mission.
In addition to his role as W/T operator he took an active part in the liberation of Marseille and particulary distinguished himself when establishing W/T contact near Hotel Splendide, in the centre of the town. To achieve this he had to cross the Cannebiere under mortar fire from the Gare St. Charles.
For his courage in returning to France in such hazardous circumstances, for his perseverance in maintaining W/T communications, and for his gallantry in the closing stages of activity in Marseille, it is recommended that this officer be awarded the Military Cross."
Signed by Major-General Colin Gubbins, 4.4.45
Military Cross (MC)
