“Pomeranian Proves Himself near Vyazma: Knight’s Cross for Feldwebel Gerhard Lemke

The Führer has awarded the Knight’s Cross to Feldwebel Gerhard Lemke, Kompanie HQ squad leader in a Grenadier-Regiment.

Feldwebel Lemke was born in Münsterberg (Kreis Stargard) on the 09.12.1919 as the son of farm labourer Emil Lemke. During the hard combat south of Vyazma he took over command of his Grenadier Kompanie at a critical moment in the place of his fallen Kompanie commander. Despite being wounded he remained with his men and repulsed all the attacks of a much numerically superior enemy.”
