Möckel’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…

“On the 01.03.1945 Hauptmann Möckel repulsed 6 enemy attacks (carried out by overwhelming enemy forces with tank support) in the area northwest of Bickendorf. The neighbouring units were overrun, and he himself was encircled. Möckel held his ground through 2 days of heavy defensive and close combat before gathering up the remnants of his men and launching a breakout that managed to get through the enemy’s encirclement ring without needing to abandon weaponry or wounded men. Then, on his own initiative, he built up the framework of the bridgehead at St. Thomas with his exhausted troops. From here he and his men bravely fought to hold open the crossing over the Kyll river for a period of 24 hours, following which new forces arrived and fleshed out the defenses of the important bridgehead.”
