The following wartime excerpt describes why Schroth received the Knight’s Cross…

“General der Infanterie Schroth carefully and prudently prepared the assault on the reinforced Brest-Litovsk Fortress, and he carried out the operation in such a skillful manner that the garrison was almost entirely annihilated. After this General Schroth relentlessly pursued the enemy and inspired his troops to achieve their best through his own dedicated example. An Infanterie-Division of his Korps reached the Jasiolda on the 5th day of battle, while Vorausabteilungen had reached the Szczara. General Schroth and his Korps thus had a major share in the success of the breakthrough and the swift advance of Panzergruppe 2.”
