Biography

Louis Broudin was born Finistère in a family of fishermen. After obtaining his certificate of studies, he joined in 1936 the school of naval pupils and prepared the Ecole de Maistrance for Navy NCO before finally entering in 1937 the School for mechanical workers in Lorient.

In December 1939, Louis Broudin was assigned to the battleship "Paris" and took part in the escort of merchant ships. He was transferred in January 1940 to the aviso "Annamite" and took part in the Norwegian campaign. At the end of this, the "Annamite" left Scandinavia and sailed to Plymouth on June 18, 1940. Choosing to join the Free French forces, Louis Broudin embarked on board the Aviso "Commandant Duboc" as a quartier-maître armurier. On board his new ship, he sailed to Senegal to participate in the Dakar expedition. On September 23, while "Commander Duboc" was in the bay of Dakar off Rufisque, the French forces remained loyal to the Vichy regime strafed the speedboat aboard which Thierry d'Argenlieu, responsible for negotiating the rallying of French Western Africa troops to Free French Forces. The battle then broke out between Vichyst troops and Free French forces. During the fight, Louis Broudin was killed by a shrapnel. His body was immersed in the bay of Dakar. On January 17, 1941, he was promoted posthumously to the rank of second maître.
