Citation:
"Major UPTON was captured near MECHILI (N.Africa) on 7 April 41. Shortly afterwards he was transferred to Italy.
In the Spring of 1943 he and three other officers cut through a wall into the Italian quarters at Camp 29 (VEANO) but they were caught whilst leaving the camp. As a result UPTON was sent to the impregnable fortress at GAVI (Camp 5) and after the Italian Armistice he was moved to OFLAG IX A/Z ROTENBURG (Germany).
Throughout his captivity Major UPTON was an active member of escape committees and was involved in numerous tunnel schemes. Three successful escapers and the Senior British Officer of OFLAG IX A/Z have praised the part played by Major UPTON in maintaining high "escape morale".
Major UPTON, in addition to these activities was in secret communication with the War Office."
