Biography

In 1918, at the age of 19, he did his military service with the 4th Rifle Regiment. Promoted to corporal then sergeant, he took part in the Morocco campaign.

In March 1921, he returned to Tunis where he was demobilized.

Edmond Coussieu then resumed his studies and successfully passed the entrance examination to the Treasury. He left for French Equatorial Africa where he was appointed Payeur of Colonial Treasuries.

When war broke out in 1939, he was Treasury agent in Brazzaville. Resistant from the start, he participated actively, alongside Commander Delange, in the rallying of the Congo to Free France in August 1940.

At 42, he did not hesitate to enlist in the Marching Battalion No. 1 (BM 1) under the orders of Commander Delange with whom he took part, as adjutant, in the Gabon campaign in November 1940. Very quickly , he is adored by his men.

Then, it is the campaign of Syria where he enters on June 8, 1941 at the head of his section. Events precipitate and on June 15, during the attack on Jebel-Kelb (Syria), he fell under enemy bullets. Edmond Coussieu is buried in Damascus in Syria.
