Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Temporary Captain
Unit:
Force 136, Special Operations Executive (SOE), British Government
Awarded on:
December 20th, 1945
Citation:
"Captain KHUN NAWNG was one of our chief agents behind the enemy lines for a year prior to being brought out in June 44.
During this period he did excellent work in providing intelligence of enemy movements and positions. In Dec 44 this officer, with a small party, was dropped back by parachute behind the enemy lines in the M?EGYAI area.
Owing to an error in navigation he was landed in an area where the enemy expected parachute landings, and not only were two of his men seriously injured by "pangyis", (bamboo stakes) but an enemy patrol was on the ground within an hour and captured most of his equipment. Captain KHUN KAWNG displayed the greates coolness and courage, although the natives were largely hostile. He managed to hide his woundd men and to save his wireless equipment, with which he immediately established communication and set about his task of organising an intelligence network. This provided information of great value to N.C.A.C. and 10th U.S.A.A.F. He has continued to do so ever since and is still behind the lines where his services are of the utmost value to the British officers now with him.
During the whole of his period he has displayed the same coolness, courage and common sense which characterised his first landing."
Military Cross (MC)
