Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Lieutenant
Unit:
26 Field Company R.E., 51st (Highland) Infantry Division, British Army
Awarded on:
December 20th, 1945
Citation:
"Lieut. HAMILTON-BAILLIE was wounded and captured in NORMANDY on 12 June 1940, and until September of that year he was in hospital at ROUEN. During October 1940 he and another officer climbed over the wire surrounding a camp at PERONNE, France, and were at liberty 3 days before their recapture. Transferred to Germany Lieut. HAMILTON-BAILLIE escaped on 22 Aug 41 from OFLAG VIID (TITTMONING) by getting through the wire. He travelled alone, and was not caught until he had reached the Swiss frontier on 4 Sep 41. On his return the German Commander congratulated him on his effort.

In April 43 he took part in a mass breakout from EICHSTATT (OFFLAG VIIB) but was recaptured two days later. Although many of his attempts were unsuccessful, throughout his captivity Lieut. HAMILTON-BAILLIE devoted the whole of his energies to escaping, his activities including tunnel schemes and other ingenious methods of breaking out. General FORTUNE has commended this officer for his constant zeal in this direction and for his efforts on behalf of others.

He was finally transferred to the persistent escapers' Camp IVC" (Colditz red).
Military Cross (MC)
