"Lt. DEACON led his platoon in its first attack in this war, against LITTLE GEORGE HILL on 29 Nov 1944. Early in the action he was wounded, but continued to lead his platoon. His courage, leadership and coolness under fire were an inspiration to his men and his devotion to duty was responsible for heavy casualties inflicted on the enemy and the capture of valuable equipment and documents. Only when the attack was successful did he receive medical attention and was then evacuated to hospital.

The success of this action has proved not only an inspiration to the company participating but has also done much to consolidate the confidence of all members of the battalion."
