Biography

Otto Bär was as "Volksdeutsch" born in Mariënbad, former Sudetenland.. After the Germans invaded Sudetenland he moved with his parents to a place near Hof in Bavaria. When he was drafted in 1941, he choose to join the Luftwaffe and was trained to become pilot. He flew the Focke Wulf Fw 190. After he was shot down in Brittany in January 1944 he was again shot down on June 22nd, 1944, this time over Normandy. At that moment he held the rank of Unteroffizier and was stationed near Paris. He most probably was stationed at Creil with Jagdgeschwader 2 "Richthofen". Although ha managed to jump with his parachute he was seriously wounded and went to hospital in Germany. He was no longer found fit to fly and was placed with a combat engineer unit wich was added to the 6. Fallschirmjäger-Division and stationed in Bennekom, the Netherlands. As Unteroffizier of the engineers he was on watch duty when on November 23rd, 1944 an explosion took place at the munition storage in Bennekom at mill Onze Rika. Due to his watch duty he survived the explosion.
