Jan Hendrik Uiterwijk was born on July 7th, 1909 as the son to Jacobus Uiterwijk and Anna de Roos. During the May 1940 war in the Netherlands he served as Commanding Officer of the gunboat Hr. Ms. Braga, with the rank of Luitenant-ter-zee 2e Klasse. After the war in May 1940 he was until june POW nr. 166 at Oflag V-a Weinsberg.

February 12th, 1932: Luitenant-ter-Zee 3e Klasse;
January 16th, 1936: Luitenant-ter-Zee 2e Klasse.
