Biography

Ronald was born on October 31 1924 in Greenbush Ontario, the son of John Fisher Horton and Christina Horton nee Horton of Brockville, Ontario. His brother was Harold E. Horton (also overseas in the army and Cecil Horton was already deceased.

He was a wire inspector with the Philips Electrical CO. and member of the Church of England and his sports were baseball and hockey.

He enlisted on October 29 1942 in Ottawa and he went thereafter on September 1 1943 overseas to the UK.

Ronald was killed in action on Thursday June 22 1944 age 19 due to a crash after or before an attack on Scholven-Buer near Gelsenkirchen in Germany. The other fallen RCAF crew member was F/Sgt George F. L. O’Connell age 20 and buried in the same Plot 2 Coll. The other fallen RAF Volunteer Reserve crew members who were also were buried in this same grave: P/O James Brodie age 22, Sgt Frank A. Aldridge age 20, F/Sgt William Brownlee age 20 and Sgt Royston Sleep age 21 and the fallen RNZAF crew member was F/Sgt David R.N. Keith age 28.

He is commemorated on the Brockville Collegiate Institute and Vocational School Roll of Honour and on the Phillips Electrical Works Limited Second World War Roll of Honour.

An Information panel is unveiled on May 1 1915 in Oosterwolde (province of Gelderland) for the whole fallen crew members.
