Biography

Ernst von Below was the commander of Germany's Colonial Protection Forces (Kaiserliche Schutztruppe) headquartered at the Reichs-Kolonialamt in Berlin. He replaced General von Glasenapp at this posting in April 1914 but was transferred to and infantry regiment as soon as the Great War was underway. During the war, von Below also commanded at the brigade level, and served the final year of the war as 200th Infantry Division commander. Ernst's father Ferdinand had also served in the Prussian Army at the rank of Generalmajor.
