Biography

George was born on October 19 1922 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, the son of George Dewar MacDougall and Jessie Kerr MacDougall nee Graham (deceased on December 16 1943) of New Glasgow. They were married on October 29 1902 in New Glasgow. His brother was Graham MacDougall (also in the army overseas as an officer) and his sisters were Mrs. Gerald W. Andrew and Mrs. R.W. Douree and another sister was already deceased a week after the birth.

He was a student and member of the Presbyterian Church. His hobbies were photography and model aircraft building and his sports were football, track, rugby, softball and basketball.

He served as a Private from June 29 1938 till September 2 1939 with the 1st Bn. Pictou Highlanders of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of Canada and he was discharged there because he was under age. He enlisted on November 13 1940 then the RCAF in Halifax Nova Scotia and he went on September 22 1941 from Canada overseas to the UK.

George was killed in action on Thursday February 4 1943 age 20 due to a crash at the hamlet of Willeskop southwest of Utrecht before or after an attack on Hamburg in Germany. The other fallen RAF Volunteer Reserve crew members were P/O Gerald Stephens age 21 in grave 3-1-4, Sgt Richard T. Williams in grave 3-1-4, Sgt Claud G.H. MacTavish age 21 in grave 3-1-4, Sgt George C. Adam age 27 in grave 3-1-3, Sgt Patrick J. Egan age 19 in grave 3-1-2 and F/O Frederick A. Parton age 24 in grave 3-1-4. The other fallen RAF crew member was Sgt Leslie H. Jenkins age 20 in grave 3-1-4.

He served with the 90 (R.A.F.) Sqdn Royal Canadian Air Force.
