    "For extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 91st Aero Squadron, U.S. Army Air Service, A.E.F., near Longuyon, 31 October 1918, While on a photographic mission Captain Douglass encountered a superior number of enemy pursuit planes. Notwithstanding the odds against him, he turned and dived on the hostile formation, destroying one plane and damaging another. He then continued on his mission and returned photographs of great military value."
