Biography

Terence Hugo was a set member of the Royal Scots, and serving with No.6 Commando. He was held in the first line of reserve before the Normandy landings, he arrived in Normandy on 9 June 1944 and was posted to No.1 Troop No.6 Commando.

In the period in which Terence Hugo was killed, the unit was active on the island "Osen" (also called Bell Island in the British documentation because of its shape). One of the assignments was to perform a water crossing with the aim to conduct a reconnaissance of the island and Merum for future actions. The activities on "Osen" cost the lives of 25 Commandos and 27 men were injured.
Terence Hugo was a boxing champion, he represented the commandos in tournaments with a number of victories. He was killed in action on January 30 at the age of 25.
He was the son of Capt James William Hugo, "Royal Artillery" and Grace Lily Hugo, of Lanark. His parents had the following inscription placed on his tombstone.

"HE WAS STAUNCH TO THE END AND DIED IN THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM"
