"Engineer Fairweather is the flight engineer of a York aircraft engaged in the Berlin airlift. He has completed 114 sorties between Wunsdorf and Gatow. The fact that the flights are of such short intervals has thrown a considerable strain on the engineer who is required to carry out, hourly, duties which he normally carries out once in eight or ten hours. As a consequence, the physical strain on the engineer is higher than on other members of the crew. Great credit is attributed to all flight engineers and to Fairweather in particular who has completed the greatest number of sorties up to date. He has made a magnificent personal contribution to the success of the air lift into Berlin. By his concentration of his task, his energy, and his meticulous care of his engines and the other technical equipment of the aircraft he has relieved the load on the captain, and at the same time set the other crew members a fine example of high devotion to duty. His work and his courage have been an inspiration to those who have come in contact with him on this task."
