The following wartime excerpt (dated 30.08.1940) describes why Klotz received the Knight’s Cross…
“Oberleutnant Ludwig Klotz penetrated into the forested terrain south of Nancy on the 22.06.1940 alongside 2 officers and 20 men of his Kompanie. Upon entering this area he confirmed that the woods were being used as an assembly area by 3 French infantry regiments (including black troops) and 2 artillery regiments. Despite determined French resistance, Oberleutnant Klotz proceeded to disarm these regiments with pistol in hand. This took place over the course of a four-hour period in numerous interconnected actions. Oberleutnant Klotz’s disarming of an entire enemy Division significantly contributed to the swift collapse of the French Mosel army.”
