Anchor of the French Expedition to Ireland

This anchor, discovered off northeast of Whiddy island, Bantry Bay, 1981 by the Dutch salvage company Smit Tak, was from the French Armada force Expédition d'Irlande. The Expédition d'Irlande ("Expedition to Ireland") was an unsuccessful French attempt to assist the Irish rebels who fought against the British. The plan was to land a large expeditionary force in Ireland during the winter of 1796-1797.
