National Monument of Scotland

The National Monument of Scotland, on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. This memorial commemorates the Scottish soldiers who died fighting in the Napoleonic Coalition Wars.

The memorial was designed to liken the Parthenon in Athens, where construction started in 1826 but this was ceased in 1829 due to lack of funds. This situation led to the memorial having various negative nicknames.
