Background information:[/]
David and Clara Sanders lived in Haarlem and put their three children (Elly, Marleentje and Bertje) into hiding in early 1942. Elly went to Barchem and Marleentje and Bertje went to the Hollebrands family in Sliedrecht. They themselves made a different choice and went out on the streets without a star and with false identity cards. When they were arrested on 26 August 1943, the notorious Jew hunter Engelbert Kobus wanted to find out the children's whereabouts. David Sanders was severely beaten by Kobus and when his mother Clara was threatened with the same fate, he gave up the addresses. Kobus went to Sliedrecht himself the next day and took the children away. Elly was also picked up. Joop Hollebrands went to Amsterdam and managed to get the family out of the Hollandse Schouwburg and the crèche opposite. Only Elly was left behind. Unfortunately, they were arrested again after a few hours. The family went to Westerbork and from there immediately on transport to Auschwitz. The family was murdered there immediately after their arrival on 5 September 1943.

Journalist Dick Verkijk wrote a book about this family, entitled “Het droevige lot van de familie Sanders” (The sad fate of the Sanders family). Stones have also been laid for this family at their original address at Delftlaan 193 in Haarlem.

Stolpersteine / Stumbling Stones:
‘Stolpersteine’ is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig in memory of victims of National Socialism (Nazism).
Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntary residence or hiding place of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim's name, date of birth, place (usually a concentration camp) and date of death. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives each victim an individual memorial. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: ‘A person is only forgotten when his or her name is forgotten.’
