Woleai Atoll

Woleai Atoll was heavily fortified by a garrison of 6,426 Japanese soldiers in 1944. The Allied Forces bombed the islands from late 1944 until the middle of 1945, forcing the soldiers to go underground. In this period, many Japanese were facing sickness and a lack of food and water. Only 1,600 soldiers were still alive when Japan surrendered.
