War Graves Slave Labourers Elbia

There are graves here for 38 slave labourers from the Stein (52°50'53.00"N 9°14'9.44"E) or Todt (52°49'21.33"N 9°12'13.68"E) camps buried in the cemetery, with 23 now marked by a gravestone. Almost all the deceased were employed at the Elbia gunpowder works. The headstones are all uniform in size and design and carry the name of the deceased, their date of birth, their country of origin and their date of death. One, Walja Tscherny, has had a photograph added to her tombstone.

Those with tombstones and their recorded causes of death are:

Ludmila Babitsch (UKR) killed in explosion at the Elbia factory on 10/10/42.
Wladamir Brei (UKR) killed in accident at the Elbia gunpowder factory.
Anatole Choroschavin (RUS) died of Tuberculosis.
Raymond De Moor (BEL) killed in air raid on 29/03/44 at 1422.
Simon Dolgopolov (RUS) died of methanol poisoning.
Latjo Drustnac (SER) killed in explosion at the Elbia factory on 10/10/42.
Camilie Filette (FRA) killed in explosion at the Elbia factory on 10/10/42.
Dascha Fortuna (UKR) killed in explosion at the Elbia factory on 10/10/42.
Frosja Jarova (UKR) killed in explosion at the Elbia factory on 10/10/42.
Johann Jermak (RUS) died of methanol poisoning.
Nikolai Kalaschnikov (RUS) killed in air raid on 29/03/44 at 1422
Varvara Kananigina (RUS) died of methanol poisoning
Aloys Karras (CZE) died of methanol poisoning
Kazimierz Kowaleszek (POL) died of tuberculosis.
Kamilia Mattys (BEL) drowned in the Weser
Waclaw Oblizajek (POL) shot during a search for ‘not stopping’.
Jan Piaseczny (POL) died of tuberculosis.
Valentin Rebalka (RUS) died of methanol poisoning.
Alexander Sacharov (RUS) died of tuberculosis.
Stefan Supran (RUS) died of tuberculosis.
Walja Tscherny (UKR) killed in explosion at the Elbia factory on 10/10/42.
Petro Ursov (RUS) died of methanol poisoning.
Josef Wawrysniak (POL) died of tuberculosis

There are also 3 gravestones inscribed as ‘Unknown Germans’ who all died in March 1945.
