Memorial Battle of Vyazma 1812

This memorial commemorates the Russians who fought in the Battle of Vyazma. The monument of the heroes of 1812, was erected in 1912 for the centenary of the battle of Vyazma. The monument looks like a double-headed eagle pecking the French flag. A plaque on the monument reads- "To valiant ancestors from from grateful descendants. Fighting near the town of Vyazma and its surroundings 15, 16, 17 August and 22 October 1812»
The Battle of Vyazma (3 November 1812) occurred at the beginning of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. In this encounter, the rear guard of the Grande Armée was defeated by the Russians commanded by General Mikhail Andreyevich Miloradovich. Although the French repelled Miloradovich's attempt to encircle and destroy the corps of Louis Nicolas Davout, they withdrew in a partial state of disorder after suffering heavy casualties from continued Russian attacks. The French reversal at Vyazma was not decisive, but it was noteworthy because of its disruptive impact on the Grande Armée's retreat.
