Memorial Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" Dunlop

This memorial in the Royal Botanic Gardens commemorates Lieutenant Colonel Sir Ernest Edward "Weary" Dunlop (12 July 1907 – 2 July 1993), an Australian surgeon who was renowned for his leadership whilst being held prisoner in the Japanese POW-camp Changi in Singapore during World War II.

The nickname 'Weary' came from his public school day, Dunlop=Tyre, tired = weary.
The monument has bronze plaques detailing his life and army careers and also relief maps of the Singapore campaign and the Burma Railway construction. The steps leading to his statue have the names of all the medical officers who served in the prisoner of war camps. The wooden railway sleepers are held down by original pins from the Burma Railway.
