Coastal Battery "Ankyaba"

This Japanese coastal battery was part of fort Amami Oshima and was constructed in 1920. It was used from 1941 to 1945 by the Japanese home defence force to protect Japan from an Allied invasion. The battery was repeatedly attacked by fighter planes during the course of the war, but managed to shoot down 18 airplanes with its AA guns.

The defensive structure in the second photograph dates from later. It is located directly next to the Amami Oshima fort and was built around 1941 under the supervision of the Japanese navy.
