The Al-Azraq Castle is one of the desert castles in northern Jordan. The castle dates from the 13th century. In 1917 Lawrence of Arabia (T.E. Lawrence) spent the winter here.
The site was originally a Nabatean defensive position protecting the adjacent oasis and the camel caravan routes during the period 4th Century BC to 1st Century AD. The Romans later modernised it as part of their frontier defences as they were unable to pursue the Nabateans into the desert successfully.
