Grave of Red Eagle

This is the grave of William Weatherford (Red Eagle) (1765-1821). He was the leader of the Native American attack on Fort Mims on 30 August 1813. His mother, Sehoy Tate Weatherford, is buried next to him.
During the Creek War, coinciding with the War of 1812 (the Indians were armed by the British), on 30 August 1813 a force of Creek Indians (Red Stick Indiana) stormed the fort and defeated the militia garrison. Afterward, a massacre ensued and almost all of the residents and defenders were murdered.. Over 500 people were killed in the massacre. About 100 Creek Indians were killed during the attack.
