Memorial Battle of Frenchtown

This obelisk commemorates the Battle of Frenchtown.
The Battle of Frenchtown, also known as the Battle of the River Raisin and the River Raisin Massacre, took place from 18 to 23 January 1813. On the 18th, the British and Indians were driven from Frenchtown, on the 22nd a counterattack followed and the Americans were defeated. The American losses were 397 soldiers and 547 were taken prisoner. The following day, the Native Americans murdered dozens of injured prisoners. The remaining prisoners were put on a forced march to Fort Malden, and those unable to keep up were also killed.
