Memorial Francis Scott Key

This memorial, at his birthplace (not this house), commemorates Francis Scott Key (1779-1843).
During the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key observed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland in 1814. Key was inspired upon viewing the American flag still flying over the fort at dawn, and wrote the poem "Defence of Fort M'Henry", that was later set to the tune "To Anacreon in Heaven" and became known as "The Star Spangled Banner", the national anthem of the United States.
