Fortress Buitensluis

Fort Buitensluis was built at the end of the 18th century. At the time, it was still a defense work of earth walls with space for cannons. The fort was strategically located to stop invading troops from crossing the Hollands Diep.

The fort owes its name to the location; at the entrance of the harbor in front of the outside lock in Numansdorp.
The fort was fortified during the 1860s to 1863. The fort became part of the Defense Line of the Hollandsch Diep and the Volkerak.

During the First World War Fort Buitensluis was reinforced with reinforced concrete and extra bunkers. The Germans started using the fort during the Second World War. After the Second World War, the terrain was used by Defense as a training ground.
