The text on the monument: "AUTGAERDEN / TO / HIS HEROES".

The names on the monument:

Citizens: E.H. Pastor GORIS, Edouard POFFE.

After his ordination to the priesthood in 1891, Joannes Goris was successively assistant pastor in Limal (1891-1893) and pastor in Jodoigne (1893-1902). At the outbreak of the First World War, he had been pastor of Outgaarden for twelve years. On August 18, 1914, on the road from Outgaarden to Hoegaarden, he was stopped by a patrol of German soldiers who were then fired upon by Belgian soldiers. During the firefight, the pastor was hit by a bullet. A few hours later he was bayoneted by German soldiers. The dead body remained on the road until the next day, after which it was taken to Hoegaarden and buried in the local cemetery.
