Obelisk of Villagodio (Zamora)

On the 6th of January 1809, emboldened by a successful skirmish against a French outpost the day before, a thousand volunteers from Zamora, overvaluing their capabilities, under-armed and unprepared, went out again to face the napoleonic troops. About 150 victims were left on the battlefield, unattended for as long as the napoleonic regime lasted in Zamora.
Obelisk erected in 1819 in their memory.
Two inscriptions, reading :
"Los zamoranos de 1908 dedican esta inscripción a los héroes del 6 de enero de 1809"
"Este monumento fue erigido en 1819"

Location : along Carretera de Villagodio, branching off the road N-122 (about 5 km NE of Zamora).
