Monument to Húsar Tiburcio Fernández

Coalition Wars (1792-1815)
Monument inaugurated on 16 August 2012 in Villafrades de Campos, Tiburcio Fernández's native village, to commemorate the bi-centenary of the reconquest of Astorga in August 1812, thus ending the napoleonic occupation of the town.
Húsar Tiburcio Fernández (1785 – 1810) was a prominent figure of the 1810 defense of Astorga when assaulted by the napoleonic troops. On 22nd April 1810, Astorga had to surrender but Tiburcio himself refused to do so and, while threatening a French officer with his gun, shouted his famous words : "Si Todos Capitulan, Yo No Capitulo" – and was shot dead on the spot (near the then Puerta Obispo).
