Memorial 87th Infantry Regiment

The 87th Infantry Regiment, stationed in Saint-Quentin, was mobilized in early August 1914 and transferred by train to the Belgian border and the Ardennes.
They ended up in Hamipré, the place where on 20 August 1914 one of the first battles between French and German troops on Belgian soil took place: "The Battle of La Justice".
The fighting developed when the French 1st Battalion of the 87th Infantry Regiment ran into the German 21st Division. At the end of the day, 300 of the 1,200 French soldiers were killed and 300 wounded and taken prisoner. Civilians are also killed in battle and civilians are executed by the Germans or deported to Germany. Houses in the area are set on fire and looted.

In Hamipré there is a memorial to this regiment "A la mémoire des…",
"For all the brave warriors who died on August 20, 1914.
They fought courageously to the end ".

A memorial tree was planted next to the 87th Infantry Regiment monument on November 9, 2018.

"Tree planted as a memory
to our brave defenders.
On the occasion
of the centenary
of the war 1914-1918

November 9, 2018 "
