Camp Shelby

Camp Shelby was established in 1917 and named after Isaac Shelby, war hero and 1st governor of Kentucky. Camp Shelby was an still is an important U.S. Army base.

On 2 August 1944, an ammo dump exploded, killing ten soldiers instantly. Another soldier died of his wounds the next day.

Building 6981 (an ammo magazine from 1917) has been placed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is also a Mississippi Landmark since 1995.
