Info board 75 Years Liberation WWII Hoogstraten

In 2019 it was 75 years ago that Belgium was Liberated by the Allied forces.
In this context, Tourism Province of Antwerp organized various activities related to the Liberation in collaboration with Liberation Route Europe. Together with the participating cities and municipalities, a themed brochure with local stories supplemented with photos was made. Information boards were placed at 48 historical locations, each with a local theme.

Theme Hoogstraten: Retreating Germans blow up St. Catherine's Church.

An observation post was established in the tower of St. Catherine's Church during WWII. At a height of 105 meters, there was a good view of the area. On a clear day they also had a view of the troop movements of the liberators. The German guns were tuned to the data from the observations from the turret. When the Allies approach and the Germans have to withdraw, they detonate the church tower with 2 tons of dynamite. The damage is enormous.
