War Monument Waasmont

The war memorial of the municipality of Waasmont is located at the Sint-Pancratiuskerk. The original, rather impressive, bluestone monument was - probably already in 1920 - erected on the occasion of the commemoration of the First World War. Recently in 2014, the original was replaced by a fairly simple memorial on which the medallion of the original monument was still attached. This medallion depicts King Albert I and was designed by the well-known sculptor Herman Heusers (1872-1938).

The only name on the memorial is Sylvain Wauters, born in Waasmont on July 16, 1894 and killed in action in Kaaskerke on October 10, 1915. He was part of the 1st Regiment Grenadiers and is the only Waasmont war victim of the First World War. Initially he was buried in Oudekapelle and later on 14 June 1924 he was reburied in the Military Cemetery in De Panne. For a long time there was a memorial plaque on the old town hall. The building was demolished and the plate disappeared. It was therefore decided to add the name to the new monument.
