Smithfield Coastal Observation Bunker

This coastal battery on the Timaru Coast was built in 1942. The battery protected the port and people of Timaru from a possible Japanese invasion of New Zealand.

The battery consisted of two guns, each in a large concrete emplacement with a small warehouse. The fire control equipment was housed in a concrete observation post.

The site was only used until 1944.
