Memorial Samuel Dougherty

American military pilot whose plane crashed there on September 27, 1944.

The residents of Zittersheim gave him a dignified burial in the municipal cemetery, an act that was particularly risky in the context of the time.

When fire destroyed the village church in 1946, Samuel Dougherty's parents, in gratitude to the villagers for their son's funeral, made a very substantial donation to the town to have the building rebuilt.

At the entrance of the church in Zittersheim there is a plaque commemorating this generosity.
