Memorial Tower or Falkenhayn Tower

This monument commemorates the fallen German Soldiers of the battle of Sibiu during the First World War and that took place between 26th of September and 29th of September 1916.
Initially the Germans placed a memorial stone on this place after which in the spring time of 1918 they started with building a tower, which was finished in September 1918.

Romania tried in 1919 to blow up the tower after the area of Transylvania became Romanian Territory, however they did not succeed in that.

From 1918 until 1942 there was also a cemetery around the tower where 130 German soldiers were buried.

On 24th of August 1942 the remains have been exhumed and together with other remains from other cemeteries in the region brought initially to Cașolț, after which all the remains were brought to the fortified Church of Cisnădioara. In this church the headstones and crosses are placed, but it is not clear what has happened with the soldiers remains.
During World War 2 the army made some openings for the defence of Sibiu.
