Belgian War Graves Sint-Kruis-Winkel

The cemetery next to the Church of the Holy Cross contains seven graves of war victims.

VAN GIELS Albert: soldier 22nd Line 3rd Bat 11th Comp.
He was killed in Ronsele on 24 May 1940. While attempting to recapture the lost positions on the Schipdonk Canal, he was killed during a counter-attack.

DE BAETS Joris: resistance member of the Secret Army, shot in St.Kruis-Winkel on September 7, 1944.

DE SMET Albert: resistance National.Royal Movement. He was sentenced to death for aiding the Allies and executed in Oostakker on November 30, 1943.

DE BAETS Gerard: soldier 52nd Line (and not 2nd ).
The 52nd Line was the training unit of the 2nd Line, among others.
Presumably he must have already been injured when his training unit left for the south of France. On May 24, 1940, he died of his injuries in a hospital in Wattou.

DE BAETS Engelbert: Claimed, killed in an air raid in Germany on April 25, 1945.

BAERS Victor: deportee, died in Aue (Saxony).

DE CLERCQ Karel: Secret Army resister, political prisoner, died in Hamburg in 1945.
