Crash Site Spitfire LF Mk IX MK232

On December 3, 1944, William Warfield, a 21-year-old American pilot in the Canadian Air Force, 421 (Red Indian) Sqn RCAF, crashed his aircraft in a field near Nivelles. He was normally based in Evere. Back from a mission he got lost in bad weather, had no sight. He was out of fuel, a stressful situation. He tried to jump out of his plane, but he probably lost control and crashed at full speed, vertically.
The wreck was recovered in 2020, after 76 years.
William Warfield is buried in Evere Cemetery.
