Breton Calvary Halle

Since 1931, a "Breton Calvary" by Oscar Sinia has been hanging on the St. Martin's Basilica against the choir wall, on the outside of the ash chapel.
In the bluestone is chiseled: "1914 - To our heroes - 1918".
Underneath is a memorial plaque for André Michiels, dean of the parish of Halle from 1906 to 1931, i.e. during the First World War.

During World War II, the basilica was almost hit by a V1 bomb.
Just above the basilica she would turn around and fall down somewhere in Dwerp.
Gustaaf Desmet, sexton during the Second World War, made sure that the German occupier did not remove the bells for remelting. For this he falsely claimed that Cardinal Van Roey had enforced an exception clause from the occupier: historic bells and bells that were part of a historic carillon had to be spared.
