Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

At the start of WW2, the city leased its municipal airfield to the War Department for $1.00 a year. The airfield was subsequently renamed Birmingham Army Air Base. During the war, the base was used by the Air Services Technical Command and Air Transport Command. The airfield was returned to the city in 1948.
